Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
