EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
